Sport and recreation enthusiasts will be rewarded in the City of 91Ï㽶µ¼º½’s 2021/22 Budget with more than $10.6 million to be spent next financial year constructing new or improving existing facilities.

Mayor Shane Van Styn said supporting healthy lifestyles has always been a priority for the City.

“People who love to walk, jog, cycle or skate will be very pleased to hear the Railway Street Safe Active Project, which has received $1 million in funding from the State Government Department of Transport, will be constructed,” he said.

“The GRAMS Reserve upgrade is funded by a $530,000 Lotterywest grant and will be constructed this financial year.

“The 50m outdoor pool at the Aquarena will also be refurbished with the State Government contributing $750,000 from their Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund towards the $6.1 million project.”

The City will also be installing an all-weather pedestrian crossing over the Chapman River at Honeysuckle Boulevard in the Chapman River Regional Park.

The prefabricated structure will enable year round use of the 11km long loop trail.

Mayor Van Styn said an expansion of the much beloved Community Nursery is also in this year’s Budget.

“Expanding the Community Nursery to grow more seedlings was ranked number one by the 10 Year Capital Works Plan Citizens Jury,” he said.

“Producing more seedlings will enable local organisations, schools, community groups and the City to plant even more trees to green the City and reduce our carbon footprint.

“We look forward to seeing these projects come to fruition on our path to recovery.”

The ongoing renewal of aged public toilets to improve community safety and ensure compliance also continues in the 2021/22 financial year with the replacement of the Eadon Clarke Oval toilet block and construction of a new, universal access toilet at the Greenough Museum.

Construction of a boating facility at Drummond Cove is also one step closer with the State Government committing to $3 million in funding for the project if re-elected.
